It is Thursday morning; as usual, my day is off to an early and busy start. I am sitting on my back porch working this morning until the day heats up and forces me back inside. Storme is snuggling up against my legs, so Potatoe has his head in my lap. Potatoe had been lounging by the pool appearing to enjoy the peaceful morning, until Storme came over to me, and Potatoe had to reclaim his territory.
Brainy Bird just emerged from the garage apartment wearing his Slumber Falls hat and last year’s Slumber Falls camp t-shirt. We are still praying that Slumber Falls does not cancel camp for the summer. Speaking of slumbers, Little Chirp is still fast asleep. Most days, I make them get up and start their at home school day on the same schedule that actual school started. Some days, like today, I let them sleep late. I won’t get done with work until around 6:30 tonight, so they may as well start later and finish later today.
Potatoe is sporting his summer hair cut, and he as usual, he seems to hate it. He had not been to the groomer in months, and his hair was so matted that it really needed to be cut. The upside to the summer do is that he is way more comfortable outside. The downside is that he is cold at night. He spent the night snuggled up next to me, another upside to the summer do.
The week has gone by really fast, way faster than the previous seven weeks of the “New Normal”. This is the first week that I have gotten to spend time with friends, and it has been amazing to see everyone again. I noticed last night that every conversation is dominated by Covid19 and politics. I am thinking I am going to stash a deck of “Table Topics” cards in my purse the next time I visit friends, so I can derail the endless, redundant conversation.
Little Chirp just passed by to say good morning on his way out to his basketball court. I have been letting him shoot hoops in the morning before it gets too hot outside. Little Chirp has made exceptional use of his new found free time. He has read a dozen or so books, gotten exponentially better with his violin and spent countless hours working on his basketball skills.
We are being extremely careful with our money right now, and I feel that the basketball goal was money well spent. Our next home improvement is going to be to resurface and extend the driveway. There are a lot of spots in the existing driveway that cause the basketball to bounce off in the wrong direction, and extending the driveway will give Brainy Bird a place to park his car that does not block the driveway or Little Chirp’s basketball court. I am not sure when this little project will get underway.
I had all of these things that I thought needed to be done to the 1974 house that we purchased last fall. Living here day in and day out; I realize that very little needs to be changed. I love every inch of this little place; having a huge backyard is a major blessing in the “New Normal”.
My sister is calling, and I need to get back to my work day, so that is for now.
It is the little things in life.
